Touching My Father's Soul by Jamling Tenzing Norgay

Book Description

A book of adventure, wisdom and spiritual enlightenment. Touching My Father's Soul recounts Tenzing's son, Jamling Norgay's treacherous climb to the world's most forbidding summit. As retold in Krakauer's Into This Air, the 1996 IMAX climbing expedition collided with tragedy. As the climb unfolds so too does Norgay's inner journey. His desire to finally stand alongside his father's soul on the summit of Everest is realised, as is an understanding of his family's Sherpa history and a realisation of the power and significance of the Himalayas. Beautifully repackaged for the paperback edition, this is a classic.

UK Kirkus Review » Born in India, holding dual Indian/Nepali nationality, partly educated in the USA, and racially Sherpa (Himalayan Buddhists of Tibetan origin), the author is the son of Tenzing Norgay, one of the first two people to reach the top of Mount Everest (in 1953); and a key theme in this book is their father-son relationship. It is also about Jamling's own ascent of Everest, in 1996 (a year when the mountain claimed many lives), and his Buddhist perspective on mountaineering, which provides a telling insight into local Sherpa culture. An easy read, the book nonetheless is far more than just another mountaineering account, offering moments of thought-provoking depth and poignancy - along with nail-biting excitement as we climb each step of the way across crevasses and wafer-thin, precipice-lined ridges.
