Towards Emotional Literacy by Susie Orbach
Book DescriptionEmotional literacy means being able to recognise what you are feeling so that it enhances rather than interferes with thinking - a contrast with emotional expression which can mean one is driven by emotions so that it isn't possible to think.' In this, the second collection of her Guardian columns (one of the longest running and most popular of the paper) Susie Orbach again proves herself to be a clear-sighted and intelligent guide to understanding what's really going on around and within us. Her belief that we must learn how to validate emotion in public and private life remains the cornerstone of her work and has at long last, become a part of public debate.

Childhood today is big business. It is impossible for any child growing up to avoid intense marketing and research shows that these commercial pressures affect children's health and wellbeing. Featuring high profile contributors with hard-hitting views, this book argues that these corporate and commercial pressures are new forms of child abuse.
UK Kirkus Review » Wonderful second collection of essays by the author of Fat is a Feminist Issue, based on her Guardian columns over the past decade, which highlight 'emotions unrecognized, unregistered and unqueried' at the core of almost everything. For example, her analysis of the smacking debate shies away from the usual polarizations of pro- and anti-arguments vis a vis children's needs and poses the more pertinent questions of why adults smack. Through a phenomenal array of apparently disparate topics - laziness, teasing, crying, gossip, infidelity, BSE, paedophiles, taxation, political leadership, divorce, au pairs, anorexia, prozac, psychotherapy - she demonstrates how emotional illiteracy diminishes individual experience and promotes social disintegration and dishonesty in public life.
