Trail of War by Sven Hedin
Book DescriptionSven Hedin was one of the world's greatest explorers. This is the first paperback edition of this classic book. It presents a story of adventure and discovery in Central Asia - a saleable and appealing combination. In this, the first of the classic travel trilogy - "The War", "The Road" and "The Lake" - Sven Hedin tells the story of a remarkable expedition he made to the remote Chinese province of Xinjiang. Commissioned by the Chinese to map a road through one of the most inhospitable regions in the world, Hedin set out on a journey that saw him become entangled in a bloody war for independence that was raging in the province.Struggling through the battle-scarred land, Hedin encountered rebel fighters and bandits, was imprisoned and nearly executed. The heart of the story is dominated by the legendary figure of Ma Chung-Yin - 'Big Horse' - leader of the uprising. An enthralling account of drama and high adventure, "The Trail of War" is also an extraordinary portrait of Central Asia and its people.

The lake of Lop-nor, the 'heart of the heart of Asia', is one of the world's strangest phenomena. Today, this once great lake - a mighty reservoir in the desert - is nothing but windblown sand and salty marsh. This title presents an account of a now-vanished world.

Author Biography - Sven Hedin
Sven Hedin (1865-1952) was one of the world's greatest explorers. His travels through Russia, Iran, Iraq, Turkey, Central Asia, China and Tibet led to some of the most important discoveries and achievements of their kind. He produced the first detailed maps of vast parts of the Pamir Mountains, the Taklamakan Desert, Tibet, the Silk Road and the Himalayas. He was the first to unearth the ruins of ancient Buddhist cities in Chinese Central Asia and in 1899 he discovered the ancient Chinese garrison town of Lou-Lan in the Taklamakan. The many manuscripts he found there are of huge historical importance. His great goal - never realised - was to reach the forbidden city of Lhasa. His books, which include Through Asia, A Conquest of Tibet, A Journey through Persia and Mesopotamia, Transhimalaya and My Life as an Explorer have been excerpted, translated and published in dozens of languages throughout the world.
