Book Description

Winner of the ASA, Oliver Cox Award for Anti-Racist Scholarship From the author of "The Ethnic Myth" comes this cogent analysis of how social science has placed a liberal gloss on racism and failed to champion civil rights. From a powerful critique of Gunnar Myrdal's classic "An American Dilemma" to a new epilogue that dismantles the myth of black progress, "Turning Back" offers a challenge to liberals as well as conservatives, blacks as well as whites, who have fueled the current backlash by providing a spurious intellectual cover for gutting affirmative action and other policies designed to advance the cause of racial justice.

Race and the Invisible Hand by Stephen Steinberg Race and the Invisible Hand, Paperback (September 2003)

Prominent figures from Booker T. Washington to William Julius Wilson have dispensed the same advice to young black men: "Get a trade". This text puts such folk wisdom to an empirical test and exposes the subtleties and discrepancies of a workplace that favours the white job seeker over the black.

Race and Ethnicity in the United States by Stephen Steinberg Race and Ethnicity in the United States, Paperback (December 1999)

Focuses on the dismantling of anti-racist policies in the post-civil rights era, beginning with a general assessment of "race" in America thirty years after the historic Kerner Commission Report. This volume includes readings, which explore the intersections among the academy, public policy, and popular understandings of race and ethnicity.
