Lens of War by Gary W. Gallagher Lens of War, Hardback (April 2015)

Noted historians select and reflect upon a single iconic photograph from the Civil War. The result is a remarkable set of essays by twenty-seven scholars whose numerous volumes on the Civil War have explored military, cultural, political, African American, women s, and environmental history."

Civil War by Gary W. Gallagher Civil War, Hardback (February 2014)

Undoubtedly the most cataclysmic military struggle of the late nineteenth century, the American Civil War spanned four bloody years of fighting in which over 620,000 American soldiers and sailors lost their lives. This book explores the political, historical and cultural significance of the American Civil War.

Union War by Gary W. Gallagher Union War, Paperback (September 2012)

Today, many believe the Civil War was fought over slavery. This view satisfies our contemporary sense of justice, but as Gallagher's searing revisionist history shows, it is an anachronistic judgment. Northern citizen-soldiers fought the war to preserve the Union. Emancipation was secondary to the war's primary goal of safeguarding the republic.
