Understanding Modern Japan by Peter W. Preston

Book Description

This text provides a wide-ranging overview of the development experience of Japan within Pacific Asia and the wider global political system. P W Preston maps Japan's shift into the modern world through a series of breaks in which Japanese polity was embedded within the wider dynamics of political-cultural and geo-economic change in the developing global system. He then charts Japan's particular development experience through four distinct historical phases before exploring the major issues in the study of modern Japan. The book examines the prospects for an increasingly integrated regional bloc in Pacific Asia in relation to the United States and the European Union. A number of underlying themes include the intellectually contested nature of Pacific Asia, the extent to which it is possible to speak of a distinctive model of development, and the implications of Japan's rise to regional and global power for future political and policy analysis. Understanding Modern Japan will be essential reading for all students and researchers seeking a deeper understanding of the contemporary Japan, Pacific Asia and the dynamics of global politics more broadly.

After the Empires by Peter W. Preston After the Empires, Hardback (August 2014)

The shift to the modern world in East Asia was accomplished in part via the experience of colonial rule in the late nineteenth century. Following imperial crisis in the 1930s and 1940s, independent nation states formed from which the political structure of East Asia is based today.

Britain After Empire by Peter W. Preston Britain After Empire, Hardback (January 2014)

Through compelling analysis of popular culture, high culture and elite designs in the years following the end of the Second World War, this book explores how Britain and its people have come to terms with the loss of prestige stemming from the decline of the British Empire. The result is a volume that offers new ideas on what it is to be 'British'.

Rethinking Development by Peter W. Preston Rethinking Development, Paperback (March 2013)

First published in 1987, this volume stresses the importance of development studies for sociology, as P.W. Preston argues that this field of study is emerging from the technical social scientific ghetto back into the mainstream of the 'classical tradition' of social theorizing, represented by Marx, Weber and Durkheim.
