Book Review: Upside Down Inside Out by Monica Mclnerney - Reviewed by (24 May 2011)

I always enjoy McInerney's novels with it's nice mirage of Irish and Australian settings and quirky characters. In Upside Down Inside Out, Eva Kennedy is in a rut and leaves behind her mundane life in Ireland to visit her friend in Australia. I love how she shows Eva's experience of Australia as a tourist without stereotyping the locals. It’s helpful how the voice of Eva and Joseph are integrated throughout the story and I couldn’t wait for their paths to cross- despite its predictability, I really am sucker for romance and happy endings. As fan of McInerney's work I especially appreciated the little references to characters A Taste For It (another of her novels)- although they are both standalone novels. Eva’s persona is definitely entertaining and a little cringe-worthy at times where I was wondering when they would both finally just tell each other the truth! As always, McInerney provides an easy read, with likeable, well-developed characters and interesting storylines.
