White City by Donald James White City, Paperback (April 2008)

The author's family, menaced by the V-bombs and rockets that were the last stage of London's war, were re-settled in a anonymous London suburb where later his adolescence was to began amidst post war privation, sexual yearning and first love. This autobiography tells of his quest for new experiences that took him all around Britain and France.

World's End by Donald James World's End, Paperback (March 2006)

World's End was a melting pot of the working class labourers who flooded to London to make their fortunes, and the author's family was no exception. This story tells of the feud between the author's two grandmothers which meant that though they only lived a few yards apart, for over a dozen years they never acknowledged one another.

UK Kirkus Review » An old theme of mine is that it is almost impossible for thriller writers to keep abreast of reality. I am, for example, writing about this riveting and hugely real book, Vadim, at the height of the western media's interest in the fate of the Russian Nuclear Submarine, the Kursk, demonstrating that both the true and the fictional offer the same stories of Moscow's corruption, incompetence, secrecy, and political ineptitude. This is James's latest hugely gripping book; his prose style, once one gets used to its crisp staccato and peculiar punctuation, has the resonance and depth of a much more literary novel. Equally it brings together all the other elements of the chaos that is modern Russia to life in a vicious and vibrant way. My only modest complaint is that the author sets the book in the year 2020, while everything he writes about - particularly the tide of illegal immigration by growing numbers of Russians trying to escape from the deprivations of their homeland - is happening now. From his excellent previous novel The Fortune Teller comes Inspector Constantin Vadim of the Russian police, to swap the cold of Murmansk and Moscow for the equally dangerous streets of New York in his search for a pathological killer. As before, the perception and the reality of what the Inspector has been charged to accomplish are light years apart. Add to this heady brew an American presidential candidate's eccentric Russian-born wife, the threat of sexual scandal and the consequent realization that, even though America is the last remaining superpower, the fortunes of the former Evil Empire can still be a threat to its security, and one has one of the best of its genre I have read in recent times.
