Values by Brenda Almond

Book Description

This volume looks at the ways in which values are more or less consciously transmitted or negotiated, sustained, realised, and communicated across a variety of fields, including literature, education, law, the application of science, and the environment. The essays aspire to contribute to an understanding of the diverse range of values found in contemporary social structures. The papers are grouped in three sections. The first section is devoted to a discussion of values at the most general societal level, including a look at tradition and values and the place of merit in values. It also includes a cross-cultural comparison between American, European, and Japanese values. The second section examines values prevailing in politics, economics, law, and science; and the final section focuses on ecological issues, education, literature, and the arts. A product of interdisciplinary discussions, this volume represents an academic venture of a pioneering kind in discussing value in modern society at a time when concern has never been higher.
