Reviews

UK Kirkus Review » Alongside reproductions of some of his most memorable works, this book outlines events at Arles where Van Gogh lived from 1888 until his suicde in 1891. By the time of his arrival in the town Van Gogh had endured a constant stuggle of financial independence but was still reliant on his brother Leo. His move to Arles was inspired by the belief that he could combine with other artists to create a new Renaissance of Art. This book illustrates the wide variety of styles and subject matter tackled by Van Gogh. Feeling increasingly driven, Van Gogh produced an astonishing number of drawings and paintings, working obsessively in all weathers and seasons, at night as well as by day. His famous 'Stormy Night' and the sunflower pictures were among those produced at this time. At odds with academic tradition he made radical use of brilliant colours in his portraits as well as landscapes. His friend Gaugin joined him for a short time at the yellow house in Arles, but by then Van Gogh, depressed by his lack of success in selling his work, had entered a strange state of mind and had cut off his ear. This attractively designed book contains detailed biographical notes, accompanied by photographs of the artist and his family. (Kirkus UK)
