Venice by Michelle Lovric
Book DescriptionElusive and fantastical, Venice is a many-layered confection of history. The writers here have captured what is most important to them in pieces ranging from the city's foundation up to the present time. The voices, entirely diverse, are both international and native: here we meet Hans Christian Andersen, Paolo Barbaro, Bernard Berenson, Mary Braddon, Casanova, Chekov, Thomas Coryate, Gabriele D'Annunzio, John Evelyn, Hans Habe, Hermann Melville, Claude Monet, Margaret Oliphant, Ezra Pound, Rainer Maria Rilke, Francesco Sansovino, Frances Trollope and Elio Zorzi. Variously a City of the Soul, The Watery City, The Merchant City, City Afloat, City at Play, The Cruel City, City of Courtesans, City of Arts, City of Flavours, The Haunted City and City of the Future, Venice is captured here in all her moods.

UK Kirkus Review » Venice, the secret city, the magical city, the city of carnivale, La Serenissima, has never lacked for plaudits. Millions of words have been written about the jewel of the Adriatic and compiling an anthology must almost be a question more of what to leave out than what to include. Michelle Lovric clearly knows the city very well, and knows the literature even better. There is a fascinating diversity here. Venetians long gone - Lorenzo da Ponte and Giacomo Casanova amongst many others - alongside Paolo Barbaro, a present day Venetian returning after many years exile, and Piero Pazzi, who demonstrates the Venetian astute business nous that has survived over many centuries by producing a glamour calendar of gondolier pinups. Foreign visitors who have been seduced by the elusive and eternal magic of the city share their first impressions, Albrecht Durer who met 'many men of sense and knowledge' and Herman Melville who was particularly taken with 'the numbers of beautiful women' amongst many others. And outsiders who, once captivated by her charms, stayed in Venice for the rest of their lives like Ezra Pound who said Venice was his 'magnetic centre'. Amongst all this richness there is also an as acerbic account of the 'caterwauling' of a gondolier so bad that Mark Twain threatens to throw him overboard. Many of the pieces in this excellent anthology are translated into English for the first time so for the experienced devotee of Venetian writing there are some interesting new discoveries. A very long Bibliography at the end is testimony to the rich vein of source material Michelle Lovric has had to research to produce this fascinating and rewarding compilation.(Kirkus UK)
