Votive by Karen Brooks

La Serenissima - a beautiful but deadly city where corrupt aristocrats rule and everything, including love, has a price. Tallow is anything but a simple candlemaker and when she has everything taken away from her - friends, family, hope - all she can do to survive is rely on the Maleovellis. Casting aside the safety of her disguise, she becomes cold-hearted Tarlo, female courtesan and the toast of those who, if they knew her secret, would destroy her. But the intrigues of the Serenissian nobility are nothing against the larger forces moving within the world. And Tallow's enemies have a hidden asset: the one thing they know she cannot possibly resist.

Book Review: Votive by Karen Brooks - Reviewed by (15 Jul 2011)

The second volume in ‘The Curse of the Bond Riders’ trilogy—a historical fantasy set in Renaissance Venice— continues the high standard set by the first book, Tallow. Similar to the ‘Harry Potter’ series, we see the protagonist, Tallow, growing more mature, and this novel deals with more adult issues, including more sexual overtones. Without giving away any plotlines, the first book finished with a cliffhanger, and it has been interesting to see where the author has taken that thread and woven it further into the various plotlines. This is a rich, multi-layered story, with enough depth to keep the reader interested but not too much to cause confusion. There are an abundance of twists and turns, and a quest worthy of some of the classics of fantasy fiction. The references to violence, torture and sex are handled sensitively and are essential to plot and character development, but do make the book more suitable for readers aged 15 and older....
