UK Kirkus Review » When Victor Lazarus left the service of the King, he estimated his gratuity would sustain him for about five months. What he failed to foresee was the length of time it might take him to find any paid work. His existence is miserable, utterly without amusement, and his wretched little room is driving him to despair. So he is delighted when he receives an unexpected long white envelope sealed with scarlet wax that offers him a job restoring a large house for a mysterious absent owner. In a small village, Michael Brown lives alone with his mother. Because of his freckled face and mop of red hair, everyone calls him Rusty. He is a solitary boy until Laurel, a young girl from a wandering family of road menders, joins his school. She is strange in many ways but they become firm friends until one day, Laurel tells him a secret of the wanderers. She doesn't come to school the next day and Rusty's destiny is changed dramatically. In the city Leonardo Pegasus, Chief Magician to the King, works wonders in his Theatre of Magic. He constructs futures for the King on his stages and uses his Empathy Engine to examine the various perspectives. Once satisfied with the outcomes, he wills the future into reality. Leonardo's future is dominated by his thoughts of his new assistant Alice, who will have unexpected effects on his life, as will the new King who has some very unusual ideas. And so the story of the wanderers and the islanders unravels, through the interwoven tales of an old man, a young boy and a magician. This is the first book in the Legends of the Land saga and Steve Cockayne's first novel. The land he creates is mysterious, at times feeling much like our own world full of technology then at others magical and almost mediaeval. It is a curious and engaging backdrop for the richly developed characters and their absorbing stories, as the clever plot leads them apart and then gently back together, leaving many mysteries to be solved in the later books of the series.
