War Poems by John Hollander

Book Description

Poets of all times, places and sensibilities have been moved to write about war. They have commemorated the Battles of Thermopylae, Agincourt and Shilph, and London in an air raid. They have announced the Charge of the Light Brigade; witnessed Break of Day in the Trenches; handed down through oral tradition, the Blackfoot Indian Song for a Fallen Warrior; sent a Newsreel from Vietnam. From Horace and Virgl to Steveie Smith, from the anonymous bards of ancient China to Adam Mickiewicz and Primo Levi, these poets have encompassed the entire spectrum of feeling - pride, compassion, courage anger fear excitement, anguish, even laughter. Here, in this anthology, are more than one hundred of their most memorable poems.

Rhyme's Reason by John Hollander Rhyme's Reason, Paperback (February 2015)

Surveys the schemes, patterns and forms of English verse, and illustrates each variation with an original and witty self-descriptive example. In this fourth edition, the authors offer a personal take on why the book has played such an important role in the education of young poets and student scholars.

Tricks of the Light by John Hollander Tricks of the Light, Hardback (September 2007)

Explores the often-fraught relationships between domestic animals and humans through mythological figurations, vibrant thought, and late-modern lyrics that seem to test their own boundaries.

I Speak of the City by John Hollander I Speak of the City, Paperback (August 2007)

A collection of poems assembled about New York. Beginning with an early piece by Jacob Steendam (from when the city was called New Amsterdam) and continuing through poems written in the aftermath of 9/11, this anthology features voices from more than a dozen countries.

UK Kirkus Review » It is perhaps comforting to think that, from something as terrible and as barbaric as war, something beautiful, albeit disturbing, should arise. Old favourites are here - Wilfred Owen's 'Dulce et Decorum Est' and Rupert Brooke's 'The Dead' have lost none of their impact in 100 years and speak hauntingly of the horrors of World War - but there are others. 'Achilles over the Trench', along with other extracts from the Iliad translated by Tennyson, tell of the long Trojan War in which the Achaeans sacked Troy and attained honour and victory, whereas, in contrast, Thomas Gunn sharply draws the 'lumpish soldier out of work' in 'Captain in Time of Peace'. This is a stirring anthology of poetry which celebrates the glory and illuminates the horrors of war through powerful words. (Kirkus UK)
