Weeping Susannah by Alona Kimhi

Book Description

Raw, funny and touching, Weeping Susannah is the story of a woman's struggle to learn to exprses herself, to live - perhaps even to love. Susannah Rabin, obsessive, hypersensitive and 33, lives with her mother in a claustrophobic Tel Aviv apartment - the perfect haven from the torment of human contact. That is, until her mother announces that her cousin Neo, from New York, is coming to stay. But the mysterious, multi-talented Neo's exotic charm proves irresistable - even to Susannah. Then, just as it seems Susannah might finally escape the prison of her own personality, her mother asks the obvious question: Just what exactly is Neo doing in Israel?

UK Kirkus Review » If this book were to be made into a movie, its heroine would be played by Winona Ryder. It's right in the tradition of films like Girl, Interrupted or How To Make An American Quilt. Susannah Rabin is painfully sensitive, horribly introverted and terminally misanthropic. She hides from life in her widowed mother's womb-like home, terrified that she might have to make human contact. Sex and physicality of all kinds disgust her, and she's only shaken out of her virginal complacency by the arrival of Neo, a mysterious art-dealing cousin who reminds her of her idol, the poet Shelley. Swiftly she falls hook, line and sinker for the exotic stranger - but is he all he seems? Susannah is heading for a fall - and a painful initiation into adult life, with all its attendant hazards, betrayals and disappointments. In the process, though, she turns into a more likeable person. Meanwhile, her over-protective mother's development mirrors her own as she gradually learns to let go. Part coming-of-age novel, part girly wallow, this debut from Ukrainian Israeli actress and writer Alona Kimhi does include some interesting correspondences between the lachrymose Susannah and the religious icons Neo sells. Overall, though, it's nothing you haven't read - and seen - a thousand times before. (Kirkus UK)
