What are You Like? by Anne Enright
Book DescriptionWhen Maria turns twenty, she falls in love. She is in the wrong town, and he is the wrong sort of man. Going through his things, she finds a photo of herself when she was twelve years old. She has the same smile, but she is wearing the wrong clothes: she is the same, only different. Anne Enright's astonishing novel moves between Dublin, New York and London, following the lives of the real Maria and the girl in the picture. Stepping through the mirror to tell the story of the two women, both haunted by their missing selves, WHAT ARE YOU LIKE? Is an exquisitely written disquisition on families and identity. It is a modern story, full of genetic jokes, of splitting and dislocation, and it is one of the oldest stories there is: a novel about twins. Threading together the lives of two young women, it confirms Anne Enright as not only the most original Irish writer of her generation, but also as one of the finest, funniest, and most affecting.

Shortlisted for The Orange Prize for Fiction If it hadn't been for the child then none of this might have happened. She saw me kissing her father. She saw her father kissing me. The fact that a child got mixed up in it all made us feel that it mattered, that there was no going back.
UK Kirkus Review » The strange, almost supernatural state of twinship is something that has preoccupied writers throughout the centuries: What Are You Like? is a thoroughly modern take on the theme of twins separated at birth. As Maria and Rose are born, their mother dies. Their father, an emotionally stifled middle-aged Irishman, decides that he can cope with only one of them, so Maria is kept, while Rose is given up for adoption. Neither of them knows about the other, and a secret it remains until Maria, now in New York, meets the mysterious Anton, who has a photograph of her as a child... except she is wearing different clothes; is, in fact, a different person. Meanwhile, Rose has embarked on her own journey to trace her natural family. Enright skilfully weaves both girls' stories into a compelling tale of self-discovery, and enhances her reputation as an Irish writer with a distinctive lyrical voice in the process. (Kirkus UK)
