Woman of No Importance by Oscar Wilde
Book DescriptionStaged in 1893, when Wilde had already achieved fame, wealth and notoriety, A Woman of No Importance was another attempt to fuse comedy of manners with high melodrama. Gerald Arbuthnot is a young man on the make, with an American heiress and the post of secretary to the brilliant but dissolute Lord Illingworth within his reach. When he asks his mother to celebrate with them, it turns out that Illingworth is Gerald's father, who seduced and abandoned his mother twenty years earlier. Loyalty weighs heavier than ambition, and Gerald declines the association with Illingworth. This edition, which also analyses Wilde's various drafts and revisions of the play, argues that the playwright here continued to explore the rivalry between an older man and woman for the affection of a beautiful young man.

Books By Author Oscar Wilde
Happy Prince & Other Stories, Hardback (March 2017)
The richness of Oscar Wilde's way with words and ideas are given full range in this sparkling collection of short stories written between 1887 and 1891. Illustrated by Aubrey Beardsley, with an Afterword by David Stuart Davies.
Importance of Being Earnest & Other Plays, Hardback (March 2017)
Around the World in Eighty Days (Le tour du monde en quatre-vingt jours) is a classic. The exciting, if now dated, adventure of Fogg and Passepartout will entertain modern readers as much as it did the Victorians. With an Afterword by John Grant
Picture of Dorian Gray, Hardback (March 2017)» View all books by Oscar Wilde
On its first publication The Picture of Dorian Gray was regarded as dangerously modern in its depiction of fin-de-siecle decadence. Although sin is punished in the end the book has a flavour of the elegantly perverse. With an Afterword by Peter Harness."
