Wrestling at the Chase by Larry Matysik
Book DescriptionWhere it all started: the story of wrestling's first ruler and the men he made famous. This is a big-hearted look at the man who made pro wrestling an international entertainment industry and the TV programme he did it with: "Wrestling at the Chase". St Louis was the capital, and Sam Muchnick the mayor, of professional wrestling, before Vince McMahon's World Wrestling Entertainment took the sport stellar in the early '80s. Before Stone Cold Steve Austin; before Brett "The Hitman" Hart; even before The Undertaker, The Ultimate Warrior and Hulk Hogan, the big-haired, big-bellied legends of the Chase Hotel were paving the way for the multi-billion-dollar sports entertainment industry we know today. "Wrestling at the Chase" was broadcast between 1959 and 1983 from the ring at the majestic Chase Hotel. Sam Muchnick, the Damon Runyon of wrestling, a legendary St Louis promoter and natural ringleader, crafted a huge, colourful world that brought the best of circus and sport together in crashing, character-filled bouts between enormous men in tight shorts. Ric Flair, "King Kong" Brody, "The Bruiser", Gene Kiniski, Johnny Valentine, Andre the Giant: all became household names thanks to the little man with the big ideas. Told with an insider's eye for detail and accuracy by Larry Matysik, Muchnick's protege and longtime announcer for the show, "Wrestling at the Chase" recalls funny and incredibly touching tales about the men who shaped the modern sport and a wider history of the sport itself, including the seismic upheavals that marked the entry of the WWE in the early 1980s and, sadly, the demise of wrestling's first and greatest burlesque show.
