Young Adolf by Beryl Bainbridge

Book Description

Paranoid, wilful, lazy, the young Adolf Hitler turns up in Liverpool to stay with his brother Alois and sister-in-law Bridget. Hailed by Alois as a student and an artist, Adolf soon irritates his family beyond measure by his constant sponging and his tendency to get into serious trouble with the English. Surely this is a young man who will never amount to anything.

Reviews

UK Kirkus Review » This provocative novel is not history but it reflects and embodies some profound historical questions - the true enigmas historians have yet to solve. Bainbridge bases her story on a discredited report that Hitler, as a 20-year-old youth, spent a year sponging off his distant English relatives (his half-brother Alois Jr and the Irish woman Bridget he married and lived with in Liverpool at the time of the supposed visit in 1911). Her Hitler is a diffident, lazy slacker with no goals, no passions and no direction, and her novel throws into stark light the question unanswered by a half-century of history: how do we get from there to here? How do we explain Hitler's evolution from the hapless bohemian of the Vienna streets to the monstrous mass-murderer he became? Review by Ron Rosenbaum, whose works include 'Explaining Hitler' (Kirkus UK)
