Description
Twelve-year-old Zackary is the seventh son of the King and Queen of Solaris, and a most reluctant knight. In despair, the King and Queen assign him to the castle administrator, Barnabas, who sends him on an errand to the Zoo of Magical and Mythological Creatures. Mistaken for a job applicant, Zackary starts working at the zoo with the resident sorcerer, Acacia. Powerful magic is needed to control some of the extraordinary creatures in the zoo: from the Stymphalian birds of Greek mythology and the nine-headed hydra, to manticores from India and the squonks - Drufflefuster, Gobblesnocks, Snivelsnork and Grimelgrout. But just as Zackary is settling in to his double life, a shadow is cast across the entire kingdom with the news that a strange creature is expected at the zoo - a creature which spreads evil and destruction in its path.

0 star rating by Boomert - The Zoo of Magical and Mythological Creatures by Sam Bowring 18 Jan 2010
Zackary is the youngest son of the King and Queen of Zedge, and he’s running out of tutors. He can’t seem to settle anywhere—not with the Artists, the Scholars, the Hunters, nor the Tacticians, and least of all with the Knights. In desperation, his parents send him to work with the Castle Administrator, tallying teaspoons and saucepans. The arrival of an unusual invoice sends Zackary on an errand to the Zoo of Magical and Mythological Creatures, founded by his grandfather. In a case of mistaken identity, he finds himself hired as the assistant to Acacia, the Zoo’s young sorcerer. Now Zackary has to contend with manticores, hydras, mermaids and squonks, as well as keeping his new job secret from his family. What’s more, he still has to deal with the invoice, which is for a mysterious and deadly beast currently en route to the Zoo… This is the first novel from comedian Sam Bowring, and it is a great success. Bowring keeps the pace fast and the tone lively. Zackary and Acacia are both strong characters, and are surrounded by an appealing supporting cast and an excellent line up of monsters. Highly recommended for fantasy fans.
