Boomerang Books Bulletin -  27 June. 2008

Miles Franklin Award winner announced

Dear [Name],

The annual Miles Franklin Award is the most coveted Australian literary award and last week it was presented to Steven Carroll for his book, The Time We Have Taken.  Further details in this edition of the Bulletin...

We were all greatly saddened this week with the news of Jane McGrath's untimely passing.  Jane's husband and former Australian cricketer, Glenn, was to speak at the Australian Booksellers' Conference in Melbourne last weekend, but was unable to attend.  Nobody at the conference knew that the situation was quite so dire.  Rest in peace, Jane - you were, and will continue to be, a great inspiration to us all - particularly the many thousands of people who battle cancer each year in Australia.  Boomerang Books has contributed $200 to the McGrath Foundation and invites all of our customers to make a contribution to this charity at http://www.mcgrathfoundation.com.au/.

Boomerang Books will participate in the 2008 Books Alive campaign commencing in late July - this is the first time that we have been involved.  Basically, the program offers a free book - Bombproof by Michael Robotham - to all customers who purchase one of the fifty books listed as part of the campaign.  This year the theme is '50 books you can't put down'.  You'll have to wait until 27 July to see the selection of books...

Happy reading!

TwilightBestsellers this Week

Stephenie Meyer's books are by far and away the quickest off the mark this week with Twilight, New Moon and Eclipse taking first, second and third positions respectively in the Fastest Mover chart. Three titles that have been in rotation of late in the Bestsellers chart; 4 Ingredients, Sail and Breath all vie for top spot but it is James Patterson's novel involving thrills on the high seas, Sail, that takes the cake in the Bestseller bunfight this week.

The Time We Have Taken wins Miles Franklin

The Time We Have Taken by Steven Carroll (Fourth Estate) is the winner of this year's Miles Franklin Literary Award.

The Time We Have TakenCarroll received the award, valued at $42,000, at a gala dinner held in Sydney last week. ‘It's an extraordinary thrill and honour,' the author said of his win, but added that it was ‘also daunting to be joining a long list of authors whom you've either studied or admired for years'.

‘The Miles Franklin comes with the gravitas of a whole literary tradition and you feel that weight almost instantly.'

The Time We Have Taken is the third in a trilogy that includes The Art of the Engine Driver and The Gift of Speed, both of which were shortlisted for the prestigious award in previous years.

The judging panel--professor Robert Dixon, professor Morag Fraser AM, Ian Hicks, Lesley McKay and Regina Sutton--described Carroll's novel as ‘a poised, philosophically profound exploration' and ‘a stand-alone work that is moving and indelible in its evocation of the extraordinary in ordinary lives'.

Sydney Writers' Festival 2008 attracts record crowds, regional events suffer

The introduction of two new venues at Pier 2/3 Walsh Bay helped attract an additional 13,000 people to this year's Sydney Writers' Festival, say organisers. The 2008 festival, which ran in late May, attracted 80,000, 73,000 of them in Sydney, compared to the 60,000 that attended Sydney events in 2007. ‘Ticket sales and book sales were also the highest ever recorded,' said an SWF statement. However, there was a drop in regional attendances ‘which was expected', according to festival director Wendy Were. ‘Developing two major venues at Walsh Bay without additional funding or staffing meant that we were unable to resource an increase in regional events at the same time,' she said.

Girl Stuff'Girl Stuff' wins booksellers choice award

Girl Stuff by Kaz Cooke (Viking) was named the winner of the Nielsen BookData 2008 Booksellers Choice Award at the 84th Annual Booksellers Dinner last Monday night.

After a moment of confusion, in which the slide for Janette Turner Hospital's shortlisted novel Orpheus Lost was projected onto the screen and mistaken as the winner by the audience, Cooke took to the stage, good humouredly asking the organisers ‘Are you sure?'

The author paid tribute to the team at Penguin, saying she ‘could not ask for a more professional bunch of people', and thanking them for allowing her to ‘do it properly'--referring to the in-depth research undertaken for her book, which involved the Penguin IT department collating 4000 responses to 16 questions.

Cooke amused the audience with tales of her own bookselling days, and said she was ‘so excited this is a booksellers award.' ‘I just think it's the most glamorous thing in the world,' she said of the profession.

Girl Stuff: Your Full-on Guide to the Teen Years, beat shortlisted titles Orpheus Lost (Janette Turner Hospital); The Memory Room (Chrisopher Koch, Knopf); 4 Ingredients (Kim McCosker & Rachel Berminham, 4 Ingredients) and stable mate titles The Peasant Prince (Li Cunxin, illus by Anne Spudvilas, Viking) and Maggie's Harvest (Maggie Beer, Lantern).
