The 2008 Books Alive campaign started last Sunday, 27 July, with the public release of the 50 Books You Can't Put down booklet and this year's free book, Michael Robotham's Bombproof.

The campaign was given extensive coverage in Sunday's News Ltd newspapers, which have an estimated readership of over 8.5 million. Half a million copies of the 50 Books You Can't Put down booklet will be distributed through bookshops and libraries. The campaign will be supported with a national advertising campaign and an extensive calendar of author tours throughout August.

‘There is no better time to start reading than during Books Alive,' said Minister for the Arts Peter Garrett in launching the campaign. ‘I encourage everyone to pick up a copy of the Books Alive guide, find a quiet spot and discover the joys of reading.'
