The Wesley Michel Wright Prize in Poetry ($4000) for 2008 has gone to Western Australian poet Caroline Caddy, for Esperance (Fremantle Press). Georgia Richter, the new publisher for poetry and fiction at Fremantle Press, said ‘It caps off a great year which saw all three of our most recent poetry collections gaining recognition in local and national shortlists'. Esperance had already been shortlisted for the John Bray Poetry Award, and the Western Australian Premier's Award. Caddy was pleased that poems like hers ‘which focus on the interactions between Australia and other countries and cultures', were ‘gaining appreciation'.
