The autobiography of convicted drug smuggler Schapelle Corby is to be released overseas and on Amazon by Mainstream Publishing.
Proceeds from My Story (Pan Macmillan) were frozen last year after the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions alleged that the money represented proceeds of crime.
Questioned on the overseas release plan, Australian Federal Police spokesman Andrew Kelly said that ‘any investigation in relation to literary proceeds of crime needs to consider where the funds were derived and whether payment falls under Australian jurisdiction for literary proceeds. It would not be appropriate for the AFP to comment any further.’
A legal expert told the Australian that a legal loophole may well exist: ‘There's no guarantee the AFP would ever get a court order (to retrieve the funds). They could try and freeze her assets, wherever they are. But the legal steps get more tenuous the more steps removed you are from Australia.’
