Announced at the beginning of Book Week, the Crichton Award for New Illustrators went to Anna Walker for Santa's Aussie Holiday (text by Maria Farrer, Scholastic). The Award recognises and encourages new talent in the field of Australian children's book illustration. It is administered by the Victorian Branch of the CBCA.

The other shortlisted titles were:

  • Pearl Barley and Charlie Parsley (Aaron Blabey, Viking)
  • Ock Von Fiend (Luke Edwards, Omnibus)
  • Crow and the Waterhole (Ambelin Kwaymullina, Fremantle Press)
  • The World According to Warren (Sonia Martinez, text by Craig Silvey, Fremantle Press)
  • The Empty City (Jonathan Oxlade, text by David Megarrity, Lothian).
