Malcolm Knox's novel Jamaica (A&U) has won this year's Colin Roderick Award for ‘the best book published in Australia in the preceding year dealing with an aspect of Australian life'. The award is named after Professor Colin Roderick, the founder of James Cook University's Foundation of Australian Literary Studies. Also shortlisted for the award were The Fern Tattoo (David Brooks, UQP); Orpheus Lost (Janette Turner Hospital, HarperCollins); Where the Sea Takes Us (Kim Huynh, HarperPerennial); Typewriter Music (David Malouf, UQP); Another Country (Nicolas Rothwell, Black Inc.); and Communism: A Love Story (Jeff Sparrow, Melbourne University Publishing).
