The 2009 Peter Blazey Fellowship was announced on Thursday August 28 at the Melbourne Writers' Festival.

Published 3 September, 2008

The 2009 Peter Blazey Fellowship was announced on Thursday August 28 at the Melbourne Writers' Festival.

The award, worth $15,000, is for biography, autobiography or life writing and went to Maggie Mackellar for her work in progress Anatomy of Grief.

Professor Kate Darian-Smith, chair of the judging panel, said the current popularity of life writing was reflected in the quality and number of applications. Mackellar's work was praised for its ‘original and compelling voice' by Darian-Smith and the other judges Aviva Tuffield, Sally White and Tim Herbert.

Kristina Olsson and Mark O'Flynn were also highly commended.

Mackellar will begin her residency at the Australian centre at the University of Melbourne, in 2009.
