As part of National Literacy and Numeracy Week which kicked off yesterday, National Reading Day also coincides with Indigenous Literacy Day today (Wednesday).

Schools that participate in National Reading Day activities go in the running to win $7000 worth of books from Scholastic Australia, or one of five packs of 10 electronic Macquarie School Dictionaries valued at approximately $1000 per pack.

Activities suggested for schools include creating a website out of reading research, going on a GoogleEarth literary trip, designing posters in response to books, creating group discussions on favourite books, and more.

The Dorothea Mackellar Poetry Awards will also be announced in Gunnedah on Friday September 5 as part of National Literacy and Numeracy Week.

Last Wednesday at the National Press Club Prime Minister Kevin Rudd acknowledged the importance of teaching children to read at an early age, and combating falling levels of literacy as reported in the period 2003-2006.
