Australian doctor, author and euthanasia campaigner Dr Philip Nitschke was detained by New Zealand customs officers at Auckland airport last week.

Nitschke was in NZ to conduct his euthanasia workshops. He was detained after two copies of his controversial book The Peaceful Pill Handbook (Exit International) were found in his luggage.

The book is banned in New Zealand (in Australia, it is currently classed as ‘restricted') but Nitschke said he has prepared an amended edition for New Zealand, removing passages that had previously caused concern. Nitschke said the copies in his luggage were of the new edition and were intended to be re-submitted to the NZ chief censor Bill Hasting for review.

After being detained for two hours and having the books and some other equipment seized, Nitschke was released and he told TVNZ he intended to stay in NZ to conduct his workshops and that he was confident that his book would receive approval and would soon be on sale.
