The 2007 Nobel Prize for Literature was announced today in Sweden. This year's recipient is British writer Doris Lessing, at 87 the oldest person to receive the award.
In its characteristically brief announcement, the Swedish Academy described her as 'that epicist of the female experience, who with scepticism, fire and visionary power has subjected a divided civilisation to scrutiny.'
Among dozens of literary works, Lessing is the author of The Grass is Singing (1950), The Golden Notebook (1962), Memoirs of a Survivor (1974) and, most recently, The Cleft (2007).
Gore shares Peace Prize
Former US vice-president Al Gore was announced as a joint winner of the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to inform the world about climate change.
Bloomsbury publishes the book that accompanies Gore's Oscar-winning film An Inconvenient Truth and his polemic The Assault on Reason. A follow-up book, The Path to Survival, will be released in April 2008.
