Published 1 June, 2008

The winners of this year's Sydney Morning Herald (SMH) best young Australian novelists awards were announced during the Sydney Writers' Festival on Friday.

The winners were:

  • Max Barry (Company, Scribe)
  • Belinda Castles (The River Baptists, A&U)
  • Jessica Davidson (What Does Blue Feel Like?, Pan)
  • Jessica White (A Curious Intimacy, Viking).

The judges this year were SMH literary editor Matt Buchanan, author Emily Maguire and SMH columnist Jenny Tabkoff. ‘The four writers were unanimous choices,' wrote Buchanan in the SMH. ‘The novels--a corporate satire, a literary soap, a verse novel and a period romance--were true to this year's disparate themes yet have in common obvious talent.'
