Rachel Robertson and Mark Tredinnick are the joint winners of the 2008 Calibre Prize for an Outstanding Essay. Judges Kerryn Goldworthy, Paul Hetherington and Peter Rose declared that it would be 'unfair to separate' Reaching One Thousand, Robertson's 'impressively subtle' study of autism, from A Storm and a Teacup, Tredinnick's look at the sustainability of life in 'the driest continent'. The essayists will share $10,000. There were 127 entries for this year's prize, a joint initiative of Australian Book Review (ABR) and the Copyright Agency Limited (CAL).
