After a handful of awards The Peasant Prince, based on the hugely popular Mao’s Last Dancer (the true story of Li Cunxin), is now out in audio book. ‘You have your secret dreams. Follow them. Make them come true.’ And so begins this delightful tale. Cunxin’s dreams take him from a poor village in remote China, where he sleeps head-to-toe on a dirt bed with his six brothers, to the Beijing Dance Academy, where he meets The Bandit and Master Chou, and finally to America where, after many years, he becomes one of the finest dancers in the world. Anne Spudvilas’ delicate illustrations are missing but with music from the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra’s stage production of the same name and a nuanced reading by Paul English, this simple Chinese fable is brought to life in the listener’s imagination instead. This is perfect for young or reluctant readers. Lovers of Tim Winton’s Blueback or Graeme Base’s Jungle Drums will find The Peasant Prince a treat.
