In the third instalment of the ‘Laws of Magic’ series, Word of Honour, we follow Aubrey Fitzwilliam as he accompanies his father (the Prime Minister) on a viewing of the new ‘underwater ship’ which could bolster Albion’s military strength against its rivals. Needless to say, nothing is as it seems and Aubrey battles not to use the magic that has helped him in previous exploits and yet still save the day. The use of language and beautifully developed characters engage and entertain, and the reader is pulled forward into a fantasy world of magical, military and political intrigue. Although the book is packed with action, the development of the characters is skilful, and the budding romance that develops between Aubrey and the feisty Caroline Hepworth adds charm. The plot and language do suggest a slightly more sophisticated reader and the novel, while suitable for ages 13-plus, should be of equal interest to adult readers. Word of Honour will be a hit in both retail and library environments and is a must-read for anyone who loves great characters, great language and great adventures.
