Book Review: Amulet:The Stonekeeper by Kazu Kibuishi - Reviewed by (01 Aug 2011)

After a family tragedy, Emily, Navin, and their mother move to an old ancestral home to start a new life. On the family's very first night in the mysterious house, a strange noise lures them into the basement, where Em and Navin's mom is kidnapped by a humongous, tentacled creature and dragged down behind the basement door.

The kids give chase down a twisty spiral stairway and find themselves in a strange and magical world below. Most surprising of all, it seems that their great-grandfather, who was an inventor and puzzle maker, was there before them – and he's left some unfinished business.

I like that the pages are colourful and glossy. That is the ultimate reading satisfaction for any reader. Also, the book deals with the themes of love, family relationships and being strong and courageous in the face of trouble. These positive messages will encourage readers to be hopeful of the future. I can't wait to read the next book!

This book was bought for a seven year old boy and he loved it - read the whole book the day it arrived, couldn't put it down. The graphics are exceptional and the story is extremely appealing. The book was so successful that I purchased all of Kazu Kibuishi books in that series and some others, highly recommended.
