Description - Camp Cook's Companion by Alan S. Kesselheim
Like death and taxes, extreme hunger after a day on the trail or water is inevitable. Life in the outdoors revolves around food - preparing it, cooking it, and eating it--and any hiker or paddler who's forced down the bland, processed "just-add-water" meals available today knows that fresh, flavorful meals are best. The Camp Cook's Companion: A Pocket Guide serves up a delightful, delicious, and varied menu of more than 150 breakfasts, lunches, dinners, snacks, salads, and desserts featuring fresh and dehydrated ingredients. It also offers the choice of a number of preparation methods, from simple one-pan offerings to creative Dutch oven repasts and baked goods. The Camp Cook's Companion is a portable, packable reference that's sure to become indispensable pre-meal reading for any hiker, mountaineer, paddler, or skier. Recipes share the common belief that there is no need to sacrifice flavor for utility. The varied selections will meet the needs of anyone looking for nutritious, savory, energizing meals. Readers can start the day with meals such as Breakfast Quesadillas, omelettes, French toast, or Gingerbread Corn Flakes.
Lunches include Magic Mediterranean Hummus, Lentil Pate, Fast Pea Soup, and a surprising variety of breads and snacks. Dinners feature such delights as Creamy Chicken Enchiladas, Basil Wrathboned Chicken, Peppers Stuffed with Goat Cheese, and Shitake Lasagna. Desserts run from the simple Spiced Applesauce to Pear-Cranberry Cobbler. Alan Kesselheim is a veteran wilderness paddler whose trips include a 420-day journey taken with his wife across the Northwestern Canadian Wilderness - a trip that called for spending an isolated winter in a small cabin. He knows the importance of good food and is a talented writer who will add richness and flavor to the discussion. The Camp Cook's Companion includes discussions on food preparation, menu planning, packing, and cooking methods. Icons designating preparation methods and ingredients (fresh, dehydrated, vegetarian, for example) provide quick and easy access to recipes. With a water-resistant cover and a trim size that will allow it to fit easily in a backpack or dry bag, The Camp Cook's Companion, is a natural purchase for anyone who backpacks, paddles, or skis.
