Fans of the supernatural will enjoy this romantic, well-written tale of ghostly possession. When John Dawe and his wife Anna inherit the manor house of Nonesuch after a fire in which its enigmatic owner Stella dies, they have little conception of the bittersweet legacy that awaits them. With a young baby and high hopes of restoring the house they move in, excited at the prospect of starting afresh, but their enthusiasm soon abates in the face of their faltering relationship, ironically exacerbated by the one thing that should bind them tightly: their infant daughter Eleanor. For some unfathomable reason she has suddenly begun to behave most unusually, displaying more in common with the mysterious Stella that merely genetic similarity.... The book opens promisingly and manages to hold one's attention very quickly with its stylish blend of romance and suspense. The use of cat Orlando as a narrator for some sections is an interesting idea, and succeeds in contrasting the more leisurely pace of the human dilemma with the immediacy of the feline saga, but at times it distracts from an otherwise absorbing story. All in all, however, this is an entertaining, well-crafted novel. (Kirkus UK)
