This is not a comforting book. In fact, it is bleak and desperately sad. The subject of the book, Porky, is so-called because of the pigs her family keep outside their bungalow near Heathrow. Awkward and bullied at school, she tells her story from the perspective of adulthood. Her family is broken and dislocated, lacking in love and understanding and as she grows up she becomes more and more unhappy. In fact, Moggach has produced a heartrending novel - and one that is difficult to stick with at first because of the subject matter. But persevere. Abuse is a challenging subject for anyone to use in a work of fiction but Moggach turns this novel into a gripping and pathos-filled read. (Kirkus UK)
