Book Reviews - The Runaways by Ruth Thomas

US Kirkus Review » In her first children's book, Britisher Thomas offers an endearing tale of two classmates who flee their dreary lives to gad about the English countryside. At first glance, neither child is appealing: Nathan (who is black) is small, sullen, and myopic; and Julia is a mousy, 11-year-old tattletale. Both are shunned in school and don't get much sympathy at home; and both excel at alienating people, including each other. But they meet by chance while cutting school and hide together in an empty house - where they find an envelope stuffed with money. Naturally, flashing large amounts of cash on the playground quickly lands them in hot water; to escape the principal's probing questions and the (largely imagined) wrath of their parents, Nathan and Julia take off, without plans or supplies. As days stretch into weeks the two fumblingly learn how to buy food, clothing, and accommodations, and they also learn - gradually and with plenty of backsliding - how to cooperate with and care for each other. Not a scary problem novel, but rather medium-high adventure. And Thomas draws her characters with sympathy and good humor: Julia has a learning disability but comes to be good with details, and Nathan, an avid reader, is given an active imagination. Finally Julia, who is clumsy to the point of slapstick, breaks her leg and Nathan gives himself up to summon help. A well-wrought, wonderfully human story. (Kirkus Reviews)
