Book Review: Playing Beatie Bow by Ruth Park - Reviewed by (05 Jun 2011)

How many of us remember reading this book in school? I remember seeing my teacher arrive with a stack of copies, dreading the thought of another mind-numbing literature read. But what a pleasant surprise! Time travel! Love! Family! Intrigue! History! Adventure! This book changed my view of English classes forever.

Returning to the book many years later, I find myself just as entranced. The Rocks of Sydney come alive through Park's words, and I find myself having a greater appreciation of our colonial past. No hesitation here in recommending this book for readers of any age, especially those who live in Sydney!

What a great novel, its characters seem soo real and true to the era. I was fortunate to be an extra in the film which was filmed in the Rocks in Sydney. I would highly recommend this book and also the film.
