Description - All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven

The Fault in Our Stars meets Eleanor and Park, All the Bright Places is a compelling and beautiful story about a girl who learns to live from a boy who intends to die.

Theodore Finch is fascinated by death, and he constantly thinks of ways he might kill himself. But each time, something good, no matter how small, stops him.

Violet Markey lives for the future, counting the days until graduation, when she can escape her Indiana town and her aching grief in the wake of her sister's recent death.

When Finch and Violet meet on the ledge of the bell tower at school, it's unclear who saves whom. And when they pair up on a project to discover the 'natural wonders' of their state, both Finch and Violet make more important discoveries- It's only with Violet that Finch can be himself - a weird, funny, live-out-loud guy who's not such a freak after all. And it's only with Finch that Violet can forget to count away the days and start living them. But as Violet's world grows, Finch's begins to shrink. How far will Violet go to save the boy she has come to love?

An intense, gripping YA novel, perfect for fans of John Green, Jay Asher, Rainbow Rowell, Gayle Forman and Jenny Downham.

Book Review: All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven - Reviewed by (30 Mar 2020)

I am not a big contemporary reader at all, however something made me pick this one up and I'm really glad I did. The emotion and strong bonds that form throughout the novel are really something that should be praised and I personally believe it does a great job at representing mental health issues in teenagers, and displays the vital fact that it's not just teenage girls who suffer strong mental health issues, which some may believe. As someone with mental health issues that have been around since I was in high school, such as the age of the characters in this novel, I personally feel it portrayed these problems and the mental state people are often in, very well. I was able to relate a lot with the characters and I think this is a vital, yet sometimes difficult thing for the author's to accomplish. There should definitely be trigger warnings for mental health issues, depression and the dark places and choices people can make as a result. I think Jennifer handled the issues in this novel very well and I am not surprised it has now been made into a film; I think it should be a read anyone in their later teens, as well as parents and carers, should read.
