Book Review: Cloudstreet by Tim Winton - Reviewed by chelsmul (19 Jun 2011)
Cloud Street traces the fortunes and misfortunes of two rural families, whose interactions and tragedies bring them closer together. Winton’s highly relatable Western Australian setting makes this an eerie, sometimes disturbing, yet highly satisfying read. Clever character development and sensitive portrayal gives every character their own unique, life-like personalities. This, coupled with dry Australian humour and a tight, logically flowing narrative make Cloud Street captivating and exhilarating. Each page makes you want to turn to the next, and the next, and the next… Certainly a modern Australian classic, and a must read. It is an epic novel, but rewarding. Stick with it, let yourself fall in love with the characters, and enjoy.
