Description - Hardy the Physician by Tony Fincham

Was Thomas Hardy clinically depressed or just syphilitic? Was Egdon Heath imbued with melancholic vapours? And does this explain why many of his characters suffered from depression, took their own lives or developed homicidal tendencies?
