UK Kirkus Review »
This collection of excerpts and short stories about wizards and magic rides shamelessly on the back of J K Rowling's success, mentioning her name or Harry Potter's in the preamble to almost every story and several times in the introduction. But the 15 authors included are successful in their own right and need no help from the Hogwarts gang. Strong readers of 8 years and up, and even good listeners of 6, will find their list of favourite authors swelling with every story. Several of the writers are well known even to adults - Roald Dahl, E. Nesbit, John Wyndham and Philip Pullman - but the real finds for a young reader are the contemporary writers Jacqueline Wilson and Humphrey Carpenter, both of whom are prolific enough to supply the most rampant bookworm. Once children have read one book about Humphrey Carpenter's Mr Majeika, they will want to read the other dozen or so, and the same goes for Diana Wynne Jones's Chrestomanci - The Most Powerful Wizard in the World - novels. Though some readers find excerpts frustrating, this book does provide a good flavour of a range of books and stories - and for that it is valuable. (Kirkus UK)
