Practical and poetic, this is a beautifully written account of a year in Jenny Joseph's Gloucestershire garden through the different smells of each month's plants. The book is as much a diary of her life and the events of her year. The book is full of diversions and written in an informal, chatty tone of voice that will enchant her readers. The book is designed to be read by gardeners and we provide appendices of plants with particularly evocative smells that can be planted with advice on how to care for them. In this book you will not only smell the roses but every other plant Jenny Joseph grows, and whose gardening plan is here to follow.

This delightful book offers us an enchanting month-by-month exploration of the usually unnoticed smells (pleasant and otherwise) that are to be found in the garden as the seasons pass. Meaty earth and compost odours blend with sharp green leaf scents; floral perfumes and herbal bouquets drift across the pages, intermingled with other acutely observed details, lovingly recalled and recorded. There are day smells and night smells, smells for winter and smells for summer. Jenny Joseph's writing is as fresh and lively as her garden, which she describes with great detail and love. She clarifies the essence of natural things, offering us utter beauty in a few well-chosen words. Our olfactory senses are almost overwhelmed with her descriptions of fresh windborne fragrances, homely musty aromas wafting from a dim corner and other more obscure but equally memorable scents, including the healing effects of the 'stringent breath' of daffodil flowers for a feverish head cold. The book ends with various planting guides - scent-oriented, naturally - and an essay on smell, also fascinating and informative. If there is one sour note to be found in this otherwise charming diary, it is the poor reproduction of Yvonne Skargon's exquisite wood engravings, which decorate the chapters throughout. Delicate botanical vignettes which should be crisp and detailed are rendered blurred and in places, indistinct, through a presumably inadequate print process. But that aside, this is another illuminating and enjoyable text from the author of the bestselling poem Warning. It should be a constant bedside companion for everyone, gardeners or otherwise. Buy one for a dear friend and one for yourself. (Kirkus UK)
