Description - Marathon by Alan Lloyd

At Marathon, the site of the key battle between Greek and Persian armies, independence and a radical new political form were at stake. Through an overview of the religion, culture, and alliances among city-states, this historical account adds depth and context to the battle that safeguarded the autonomy of Greek life, allowed for the development of a cultural foundation for Western civilization, and protected the young democratic government. Detailing the stories of brutal fighting, Philippides' final run proclaiming news of victory, and the powerful political changes that took shape immediately after, this vivid description provides the details of a pivotal moment in Western history.

Book Reviews - Marathon by Alan Lloyd

UK Kirkus Review » In 490BC at Marathon, a small band of citizen volunteers stood against the army of the greatest Empire the world had yet seen. The victory of the Athenians over the mighty Persians is remembered as one the great 'against the odds' victories, and as a crucial turning point world history. It also gave the name to a classic road-race, in honour of Philippides, the runner who took news of the victory home to Athens. In this new paperback edition of his 1973 classic, Alan Lloyd retells this history in a lively and gripping fashion. He places the battle in its broad historical context, demonstrating how the armies which met that day represented two great civilisations in conflict. His view that Marathon saw the triumph of 'western democracy' over 'oriental despotism' may be a little simplistic, but he gives due credit to the achievements of Persian civilisation, and he tells the story with such verve that the reader will forgive him. A great story well told, this book will appeal to the general reader with an interest in history. (Kirkus UK)
