Parker Tyler (1904-1974), one of the few great American film critics, was intimate with and enormously respected by many of the underground and experimental filmmakers of his time. In this book, Tyler evaluated the Underground in general and the seminal films in particular, covering the history and scope of the genre with insight and verve. Like Tyler's Screening of the Sexes: Homosexuality in the Movies is one of the masterpieces of cinema literature.

Now that the underground has surfaced with its neurotic tentacles flailing the Establishment, movie goers must look to their metaphors and metaphysics. In Parker Tyler they will find a myriad of reference points in chapters entitled "Psychedelic Anamorphosis-and Its Lesson," or "Plastique versus Surplot." It is to Mr. Tyler's credit that he manages to make his points at least reasonably comprehensible in discussions of the camera as voyeur, influences like Dada-Surrealism, chemical aesthetics, peripheral realities vs. central illusions, and the film maker as "frequently no more than a stage manager of the daily lives of underground bohemia. "Mr. Tyler was one of the first to take the underground art seriously and he is intimately acquainted with creators and casts from Stan Brakhage to Jonas Mekas to Ondine. A must for the coterie.
