It was a junket, a freebie. A 'team-building' weekend in the highlands for lawyers, advertising execs, businessmen, even the head of a charity. Oh, and a journalist, specially solicited for his renowned and voluble scepticism - Jack Parlabane. Amid the flying paintballs and flowing Shiraz even the most cynical admit the organisers have pulled some surprises - stalkers in the forest, power cuts in the night, mass mobile phone thefts, disappearing staff, disappearing guests: there's nothing can bring out people's hidden strengths or break down inter-personal barriers quite like not having a clue what's going on and being scared out of your wits. However, when the only vehicular access for thirty miles is cut off it seems that events are being orchestrated not just for pleasure ...And that's before they find the first body. Thereafter, 'finding out who your colleagues really are' is not so much an end product as the key to reaching Monday morning alive. Visit the author's website at www brookmyre.co.uk

OFP 857, Smith has been rattling around in secure prisons since 1991. His real name is Maurice Shiach. He was originally recruited as an informant by special Branch, but his extreme right-wing views became an embarrassment, particularly after it became clear that he was responsible for the death of a left-wing activist lawyer. Incarcerated without trial and facing an indefinite sentence, 'Smith' expects to spend the rest of his life in jail. But now the powers-that-be have decided to get him out - for a specific purpose. A month after Shiach's planned 'escape', investigative journalist Jack Parlabane is sent to the wilds of Scotland on a motivational course for upwardly-mobile corporate executives. 'Posh digs and yomping through the hills', Jack's editor tells him. How could she know that somebody would exchange their paint gun for a real firearm, that the 'games' would become perilous? This writer is clearly an acquired taste, chiefly for fans of 'lad-mags' and 'chick-lit'. His style is heavy on irony and the humour is biting (and a tad tedious after a while).(Kirkus UK)
