Description - Cold Blood by Theresa Monsour

When Bunny Pederson disappears after being a bridesmaid at her best friend's wedding, the police call for volunteers to help search for her. One of them, a travelling shirt salesman, discovers the woman's amputated finger and the missing person inquiry becomes a murder investigation. In the absence of a body, the salesman, Justice Trip, is courted by the media - a position he'd learned to enjoy from a similar experience some years previously. Paris Murphy, a detective with the Minneapolis-St Paul's Police Department, remembers Trip from her schooldays and isn't convinced by his act as a caring citizen, especially when Bunny's body is found in an area Trip had visited. The case isn't strictly in her jurisdiction, but it is a welcome distraction from her failing marriage and her guilt over an affair she knows isn't really over. Justice Trip was ugly, still lived with his invalid father in a trailer park and his c.v. was a repetitive litany of firings from dead- end jobs. But he was very successful at killing people - and getting away with murder - until Paris Murphy crosses his path.

Book Reviews - Cold Blood by Theresa Monsour

UK Kirkus Review » Clean Cut was an auspicious debut thriller for Monsour, and the blunt title of this new book promises more complex and well-honed diversion -- which is exactly what we get. Once again, characterisation is a key element: Monsour is canny enough to draw us into her characters so that the tense storytelling exerts the requisite grip. A search has been mounted for Bunny Pederson, who has vanished after acting as a bridesmaid at a friend's wedding. A salesman, Trip, who has volunteered to help in the search, discovers a severed finger, but the case remains one of habeas corpus. Minneapolis detective Paris Murphy remembers Trip from her school - and he has had an involvement with a previous case. Her marriage in trouble, and a faltering affair to cope with, Paris doesn't need to involve herself. Needless to say, she does - with dangerous results. Shades of Michael Connelly haunt a dark and atmospheric piece. (Kirkus UK)

US Kirkus Review » Paris Murphy, of St. Paul Homicide, returns in a mystery as sudsy as her debut (Clean Cut, 2003). It's all about Paris-gorgeous Paris ("long black hair, violet eyes . . . narrow waist but big breasts"), with whom all the opposite sex is so desperately in love that simply counting the ways leaves little room for mystery or suspense. Sure, there are the obligatory murders, but the monster responsible is too color-me-evil to take seriously. His parents christened him Justice Trip; schoolyard bullies tacked on "Sweet" as a form of abuse. Everyone abuses Trip: his loopy dad, a variety of mean-spirited bosses, women in general, and Paris, another schoolmate, in particular-or at least so Trip thinks, concluding that he has no choice but to become a serial killer. Meanwhile, back at the cop shop, the really important stuff is happening. Homicide Commander Axel Duncan joins the ranks of the besotted, forming a quadrangle with Paris's husband and lover. Jack, the husband, and Erik, the lover, are both hunks, of course, and jealous as you please. When she's not keeping the hunks from demolishing each other, Paris finds a free moment to set a trap for Trip-easy prey, after all, since he too, in his own sociopathic way, is crazy about Paris. Stumbles as mystery, though it might work for readers who demand romance at any price. (Kirkus Reviews)
