Book Review: Wildkin's Curse by Kate Forsyth - Reviewed by Joth (10 Aug 2010)
I haven't read the Starthorn Tree, which I assume is the precursor to this book. I read The Wildkin's Curse as a standalone, trying to get a handle on how Kate Forsyth pitches to a young audience. Consequently, I read quite critically. However, I was quite surprised when, on the final few pages, as the simple romance finally bloomed, I actually got a lump in my throat. One of her characters, a changeling by the name of Tom-Tit-Tot reminded me very much of Gurgi from Lloyd Alexander's 'Book Of Three'. In fact, the tone of the two authors is quite similar. I thoroughly enjoyed the character of Zakary. He was well drawn. His effeminate and cowardly demeanour bugged me no end, just like it was meant to. Kate Forsyth got under my critical radar with this one. She wove some magic. Jotham Kingston. (34)
Kate Forsyth is the author of the Witches of Eileanan series, The Starthorn Tree, The Chain of Charms series, Wishing for Trouble, Dragon Gold, the illustrated children's series Sea Magic, and The Puzzle Ring.
